Testing, Seminars, & Certifications

2018 Spring Conference Is Here!

Several Topics Offered For Spring!

Spring is here and we're ready for another opportunity to learn! The CARSES Spring Conference this year will be held on Saturday, April 14th from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at El Camino College in Torrance, California. As usual, a testing session will be held the evening before at 6:00 pm.

Registration for both the conference and CM, CMS, NATE, and EPA exams will be open on March 1st HERE

Session 1 will be presented by Dave Gomer, manufacturers representative for LAU fan and blowers. Dave will be discussing proper replacement of blower wheels and fans. We hope this the information and handouts given will allow technicians to replace a non-stock fan blade, for instance, with a suitable one which will not over-amp it's motor or move an incorrect quantity of air.

Session 2, delivered by Allen Schneider of Dawson Company, will be on field maintenance of pumps, including some useful tips on replacement of pump seals, couplings, etc. Pump accessories such as strainers, suction diffusers, and valves will be discussed. And they will even have a small B&G 1510 pump to tear down and show the parts of.

Session 3, presented by Justin Bright of National Comfort Institute (NCI) is called, "How to improve your diagnostics with the free NCI AirMaxx App. Technicians use the app to determine the performance of a system by inputting basic measurement data. The tool can also be a sales opportunity for your company. Also discussed: why correct airflow is critical, usefull test instruments for technicians, how to rea manufacturers literature, challenges to measuring fan airflow, and how to communicate to customers about blower performance.

Session 4, by Jeff Sturgeon, also of NCI, will unravel the mysteries of hydronic system measurement and diagnostics. Jeff will show how to measure pump pressures, determine GPM, measure and set flow through a balancing valve/station, and how to use the results to diagnose the performance of a system.

All seminars are held on Saturdays unless otherwise noted. NATE, EPA-608, RSES Certificate Member (CM), and Certificate Member Specialists (CMS) exams are held the evening before at 6:00 pm at the same host location and again on Saturday at 5:40 pm.

Seminars include lunch and have a trade & technology expo during the lunch hour.

The Long Beach chapter of RSES occasionally hosts events that are in addition to our monthly educational meetings.

For the public and our membership, we make every attempt to hold exams for NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification, EPA standard 608 certification for handling refrigerants within the U.S., and for Certificate Member (CM) exams which are for RSES members only. When needed, we will also try to accomodate Certificate Member Specialist (CMS) exams which are available for CM status members.

For more information on what NATE is, please select the NATE link on the "Blogsite & Industry Links" tab, or see below to see what to do to keep your certification.

Have you given any thought to obtaining a C-20 or C-38 license and going into business for yourself? This seminar covers most of what we hope are your areas of need...

  • Why should I need a license?
  • What is involved in getting a license and what are the pitfalls in doing so?
  • What kind of help might be available for small start-ups like mine?
  • Once you start your business, you may want some information on how to run it. Whether you want to be a "one man show" or build it up to several technicians, we'll have some suggestions for you to get you started.

Lunch will be provided. This is a one-day seminar.

Class to be offered in the spring of 2017. Watch for signup information after the first of the year!
